Ultra Long Carbon Nano Tubes for Various New Applications

Matan Alper, Tortech Nano Fibers, Ma'alot Tarshiha, Israel

Tortech Nano Fibers is a startup company founded in 2010 and located in Ma'alot, Israel, jointly owned by Plasan Sasa Ltd. (Israel) and Q-Flo Ltd. (UK).

The technology of Tortech is based on a novel process that was developed at Cambridge University. The process is a continuous gas phase catalytic reaction between a floating catalyst and a carbon source. The process enables the formation of a continuous and robust non-woven mat that could be handled and used without the addition of binders.

What are Carbon Nanotubes?

Carbon nanotubes are among the amazing materials that science sometimes creates by accident, but that will likely revolutionize the technological landscape of the century ahead.

Discovered in the 1990's, Carbon Nanotubes(CNTs) are allotropes of carbon arranged in a cylindrical nanostructure.

These cylindrical carbon molecules have unusual properties, which are valuable for nanotechnology, electronics, optics and other fields of science and nanotechnology.

CNT molecules are larger than molecules of any other material. One of the reasons for the extraordinary properties is the length-to-diameter ratio that can reach up to 250,000:1, significantly larger than any other material.

CNT demonstrates some unusual properties like:

  • Exceptional strength
  • High thermal conductivity
  • High electrical conductivity
  • High elongation at break
  • Chemical stability in harsh conditions

Tortech has developed a patent-protected, reliable, controllable and scalable process for manufacturing Ultra-Long CNT (ULCNTs) mats.

A mat comprises of a multi-layered network of non-woven fabric made from ULCNTs. As a raw material, a CNT mat is easier and safer to handle than a bulk of CNT powder.

The combination of properties of the CNT mat lends itself to a spectrum of new applications:

  • Aviation
  • Lightning Strike Protection for planes
  • De-icing solutions for planes
  • Energy
  • EMI Protection
  • Batteries
  • Fuel cells
  • Filtration
  • Oil & water separation
  • "Smart" clothing
  • Light heating elements: Heat sink, heating pads, etc.
