Materials in Oil and Gas, Refining and Petrochemical Engineering

Alec Groysman, Chemical Engineering, Technion, Shekhaniya, Israel

The aim of this work is to analyze physicochemical behavior of engineering materials and their use in oil and gas, oil refining, and petrochemical industry, factors causing corrosion, corrosion mechanism, corrosion mitigation and preventive measures, and monitoring methods.

Oil and gas, oil refining and petrochemical industry exists more 150 years. A diverse and rich experience gained. Discovering of new fields under harsh conditions (high temperatures and pressures, aggressive constituents) led to use of new materials, new corrosion control methods, and necessity of development of new monitoring measures. All these issues account for the development of corrosion management influencing process safety.

Correct selection of materials suitable for exploitation in oil and gas media under aggressive conditions, factors influencing corrosion phenomena, corrosion control and monitoring measures, necessity of corrosion education and knowledge transfer are described and illustrated. Corrosion management plays a vital role in solving of corrosion problems. The results are partly summarized in the new book of the author “Corrosion Problems and Solutions in Oil Refining and Petrochemical Industry” published by Springer in 2017.

Problems for solutions in future also are discussed. This knowledge is vital for design, maintenance, process safety and sustainable development in oil and gas, oil refining, and petrochemical industry.
