V. Srini Srinivasan, Ph.D., is Executive Vice President, Special Assignments, and Chief Science Officer at USP. He provides leadership for documentary standards-setting activities for all of USP’s compendia. Dr. Srinivasan works closely with the Council of Experts, USP's volunteer scientific decision-making body, and with the Expert Committees and Expert Panels that support the Council.

During his more than 25 years with USP, Dr. Srinivasan has been instrumental in the organization’s international expansion efforts. From 2005 to 2008, as Vice President, International Sites, he helped establish USP's sites in Hyderabad, India (2006); Shanghai, China (2007); and São Paulo, Brazil (2008). Dr. Srinivasan has worked extensively with local government officials to obtain necessary approvals and permits to ensure that USP's international laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art analytical instruments, expert scientific staff are recruited and trained, and standard operating procedures and QA/QC procedures are established and followed.

Recently, Dr. Srinivasan oversaw the 120,000 square foot expansion of the office and laboratory facility in Hyderabad, India, which was initially inaugurated in September 2011, and expanded in July 2012. He also supervised the expansion of the USP–China site. Inaugurated in 2014, the new facility features laboratories capable of providing analytical services for the development of reference materials for all of USP’s compendia. In addition, Dr. Srinivasan has overseen USPs microbiological, biological, and food testing. Dr. Srinivasan's international assignments have involved working closely with USP’s CEO and providing technical assistance to Official Medicinal Control Laboratories around the world.

During his time at USP, Dr. Srinivasan has developed, overseen and helped expand USP’s voluntary Verification Programs, which are offered to global manufacturers of pharmaceutical ingredients (drug substances and excipients) and dietary supplement ingredients and products. Dr. Srinivasan also has served as USP’s director of over the counter (OTC) Drugs and Dietary Supplements, a role in which he assisted the USP Council of Experts in establishing public standards for prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, botanicals, and for dietary supplement products containing these substances.

Before joining USP in 1986, Dr. Srinivasan was Divisional Manager of Research and Development and Quality Assurance and Quality Control at Glaxo India, in Mumbai. He has a Ph.D. in organic chemistry (natural products and medicinal chemistry) from the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada. He completed postdoctoral research work in chemical and biosynthetic studies on alkaloids and triterpenoids at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. Dr. Srinivasan is a member of the Drug Information Association, American Society for Nutritional Sciences and the American Society for Clinical Nutrition. He also has authored numerous publications on synthetic organic chemistry, aerosols, biosynthesis of alkaloids, nutritional supplements, and botanicals.
