Qlight Nanotech – innovative display technologies based on semiconductor nanocrystals

Qlight Nanotech is a start-up company, founded in 2009 by Prof. Uri Banin from the Institute of Chemistry and the Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at the Hebrew University. Qlight is developing a novel semiconductor nanocrystals technology for Flat Panel Displays and optical applications. This technology merits high energy efficiency, high quality colors and wavelength accuracy, and opens the way for new generation of flat panel displays with superb features.

To this end, Qlight Nanotech is developing unique semiconductor nanocrystals, where the control of size, shape and composition enables unprecedented control over light emission properties including the emission wavelength, brightness and light polarization properties.  These nanocrystals are at the base of Qlight’s products which include:

1. Flat panel displays LCD Backlight Active Brightness Enhancement Film (ABEF). Qlight’s active backlight enhancement film provides brightness enhancement enabling doubling of battery life in mobile displays and up to 50% energy savings in TVs. Qlight’s approach provides this along with the ability to precisely tailor and improve the color quality way beyond standard LEDs backlights, delivering a crisp, bright and colorful image.

2. Qlight QR display. A new design for flat panel displays, QR display, which can provide large area displays and flexible displays, is under development. This offers a simplified screen design that will deliver high color quality, high energy efficiency and  cost effective manufacturing and has the potential to revolutionize the flat panel display field. Partnership with major players in the display field to bring the technology to market is underway.

Qlight has an exclusive license to a patent portfolio from Yissum, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem technology transfer company, and has partnered with Merck KGaA, the world leader in liquid crystal materials for display applications.
