A Logical Approach to Critical Cleaning for the Pharmaceutical Industry

Jeff Phillips, Alconox Inc., NY , USA

Much cleaning in the pharmaceutical industry is based more upon historical and tribal knowledge than a logically thought out systematic way to determine the best detergent for a cleaning process.  This talk will begin to show what are the basic types of detergents and how to best choose a detergent for a given product train.  The use of structural properties and functional groups in products to determine appropriate detergent selection will be reviewed.   Two case studies will be presented at the end to illustrate concepts discussed.
