Benchtop NMR Spectroscopy: Products and Applications

Harald Todt, Sales and Marketing, Magritek GmbH, Aachen, Deutschland (harald@magritek.com)

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful and information rich analytical technique that can elucidate molecular structures. Due to the size and complexity of high field NMR instruments, this method has been limited in its use. Recent advances in NMR magnet technologies present us new mobile NMR spectroscopy solutions running cryogen-free on the lab bench or in the fume hood, using either standard NMR tubes or flow cells for monitoring and investigating chemical reactions. Now NMR spectroscopy provides us with an analytical tool that is much more flexible, affordable, robust and easy to use. We will present a number of technical solutions combined with application examples that demonstrate how benchtop NMR spectroscopy can be used for identification and quantification purposes and to monitor reactions in real time. This information can be used to determine reaction end point, optimise yield and provide detailed understanding about reaction kinetics, as well as identify intermediates.
