Application of Argentometric Chloride Determination by ICP-OES to a Wide Range of Sample Matrices

Nadav Lerner, Chemistry, Ben Gurion University, Beer-Sheva, Israel (Nadavlea@post.bgu.ac.il)

Chloride determination is of great importance, as chloride plays important roles in human health, pitting corrosion, environmental processes, and agriculture. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) has become one of the premier instruments used for element analysis. ICP-OES is simple to operate, offers a wide dynamic range, and can determine multiple elements in a single measurement. Most importantly, ICP-OES can measure nearly every naturally occurring element. However, chloride determination by ICP-OES is currently limited to specific instrument types or the use of additional equipment. This is mainly a result of spectral inferences from air components at the sensitive chloride emission wavelengths.

This talk will present an argentometric method for the indirect measurement of chloride, applicable to any ICP-OES instrument. The presentation will discuss the method principles and development, as well as the analytical parameters of the method (LOQ, working range, selectivity and robustness). Finally, measurement results obtained from a variety of sample types (urine, wine, sea-water, and purified water) using the argentometric method will be presented.
