Coolant liquid is used in many systems in the Israeli air force. Corrosion occurs in the cooling liquid systems due to the formation of a galvanic cell between brass tubes and aluminum plates in the presence of cooling liquid. In order to prevent corrosion, additives, which are trade secrets, are inserted to the cooling liquid. One of the known additives is MBT – Mercaptobenzothiazole, used to prevent copper from dissolving in to the cooling liquid. The concentration in the liquid, was set to be 700 to 1300 ppm. in order to be efficient, it was decided to develop a method for the quantification of MBT using HPLC equipped with a column used for the qualification of other additives in the cooling liquid. after testing for solubility different attempts with a variety of mobile phases were made in order to quantify MBT . the method was finalized by adjusting temperature, flow, wavelength yielding a new method for the quantification of MBT within cooling liquids.
