Dr. Jack Henion is Emeritus Professor of Toxicology at Cornell University where he was a member of the College of Veterinary Medicine from 1976-2006.  Professor Henion earned his BA degree in chemistry at Alfred University, an MS degree in chemistry from the Rochester Institute of Technology and his doctorate from the State University at Albany in synthetic organic chemistry and analytical organic mass spectrometry under the guidance of Professor David G. I. Kingston. Following post doctoral studies in ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC under Prof. Maurice Bursey, he commenced a productive tenure as professor of toxicology at Cornell University.  During his tenure at Cornell Professor Henion conducted research and explored applications in many areas of liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) employing atmospheric pressure ionization (API) sources.  While at Cornell Professor Henion published over 200 peer-reviewed papers in the scientific literature, trained over 50 students and post doctorals, and received twelve patents for inventions developed from his work.

Professor Henion is a co-founder of Advion BioSciences where he was Chairman, President, and CEO of Advion. BioSciences, Inc. from 1993 through 2006. The company provides premier LC/MS/MS services and has also developed and marketed a novel microfabricated chip and associated robot called the TriVersa NanoMate, which it commercialized in mid 2002. In April 2006 Professor Henion was appointed Chief Scientific Officer for Advion BioSciences and remains Chairman of the Board of Directors.  Recently Advion BioServices was acquired by Quintiles and Prof. Henion holds a half-time appointment with this company. He also has a half-time appointment with Advion, Inc. which has recently launched the ‘Chip-Mate’ nanoLC ESI system as well as a new, personal and compact API single quadrupole mass spectrometer.

Professor Henion has received three Doctor Honoris Causa (Honorary Doctorate) degrees in recognition of his international reputation in modern analytical techniques.  The first honorary doctorate was from the University of Ghent, Belgium, in 1991 for his work in trace residue analysis in biological samples, the second was awarded in May, 2000 from the Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden in recognition of his research in modern LC/MS/MS bioanalytical techniques.  The third honorary doctorate was awarded in May, 2013 by the University at Albany in Albany, NY for his combined academic and entrepreneurial accomplishments in the field of LC/MS and its myriad bioanalytical applications.  Dr. Henion also presented the commencement address for the University at Albany graduating student class in May, 2013.  In the Spring of 2001 Prof. Henion was recognized as the College of Science outstanding alumnus of the year from the Rochester Institute of Technology where he received his MS degree in analytical organic chemistry in 1967.  In the fall of 2003 Prof. Henion received the Martin Medal for his contributions to the separation sciences coupled with mass spectrometry. In the fall of 2006 Professor Henion was recognized as an outstanding alumnus of the University of Albany where he earned his doctorate in analytical organic chemistry in 1971 and in 2007 Professor Henion became a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, BA FRSC.  More recently Professor Henion received the 2008 Eastern Analytical Symposium Award for outstanding achievements in mass Spectrometry and is the recipient of the 2011 CPSA Distinguished Analytical Scientist award.
