Jonathan Leor is a Professor of Cardiology at Tel-Aviv University and Head of the Cardiovascular Research Institute at Tel-Aviv University and Sheba Center of Regenerative Medicine. He obtained his M.D. from Tel-Aviv University, and did a fellowship in experimental Cardiology at the University of Southern California under Robert A. Kloner, M.D., Ph.D.  His laboratory’s research focuses on myocardial infarctions and the heart’s lack of intrinsic regenerative ability.  Leor is a world-renowned leader in the development of novel cardiovascular regenerative therapies. He is a co-inventor of breakthrough injectable biomaterial to treat heart attacks. The biomaterial was licensed by a major US drug company, and is currently evaluated in a phase II/III international clinical trial. Prof. Leor has received several prestigious prizes over the course of his career, such as the Michelle Mirowski Award for Accomplishments in Cardiovascular Medicine, and he is currently working with nanotechnologies to improve the therapeutic index of therapies for ischemic diseases. Todate, Leor’s lab is aiming to target the inflammatory pathways, specifically macrophages and stem cells, to optimize cardiac repair and regeneration using different platforms. Leor is the author and co-author of more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in prestigious journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, PNAS, and Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
